We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks

The 1989 WANK (Worms Against Nuclear Killers) worm that attacked NASA computers, is depicted as the work of Melbourne based hackers in Australia, including Assange. In 2006, Australian Internet activist Julian Assange launched Wikileaks.org, the site’s objective was to leak top-secret documents and other classified information, mostly targeting governments and their military operations.

Some of the key events include the 2009–2010 leaks about the Icelandic financial collapse, Swiss banking tax evasion, Kenyan government corruption, toxic-waste dumping, Bradley Manning’s communications with Adrian Lamo, uploads to Wikileaks of the Iraq and Afghanistan war documents, diplomatic cables, and video and the exposure to the FBI by Lamo.

Documentarian Alex Gibney explores the inner working of the website, moving beyond black and white to penetrate a complex network of activity guided by courage and idealism but also allegedly guilty of ethical insensitivity and hypocrisy.
