This film takes a look at the controversial judgement to execute American serial killer Aileen Wuornos during a time when she was suffering from mental health issues.
In an interview the day before she was due to be executed, Wuornos states that she had been subject to torture during her time as an inmate and claims that the prison uses sonic pressure to control or alter her mental health.
In her rage, Wuornos rails against a society that she says “railroaded my ass” before abruptly ending the interview.
Director Broomfield comments that he finds it hard to believe that Aileen was deemed of “of sound mind” a day before by psychiatric examiners.
Aileen concludes with footage of a prison spokesman reading Wuornos’ final statement at a press conference after her execution: “I’m sailing with the Rock, and I’ll be back. Like Independence Day with Jesus, June 6, like the movie, big mothership and all. I’ll be back.”
