Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer

A tribute to jazz legend Anita O'Day

Ian McCrudden

Loved by millions of fans around the world for her vibrant music and personality, this documentary explores the life and career of jazz diva Anita O’Day.

Before her death in November 2006 at age 86, O’Day was one of jazz music’s most complex and rhythmic vocalists, sharing her unique voice with the world for six decades.

The film reproduces all the magic of the sly Chicago native, a white woman who could hold her own against the likes of jazz legends Billie and Ella, from Gene Krupa’s bandstand to solo stardom.

Combined with rarely seen video footage and television interviews, we hear from luminaries George Wein, Annie Ross and Will Friedwald who share their thoughts on how O’Day influenced the history of jazz music.
