CITIZENFOUR gives viewers unprecedented access to original interviews with Edward Snowden from his Hong Kong hotel room as well as the classified documents that prove the illegal invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency (NSA).
Filmmaker Laura Poitras had already begun working on a documentary about surveillance for a few years when Snowden made contact with her, using the codename “CITIZENFOUR,” in January 2013.
Snowden made contact with Poitras due to his knowledge of the filmmaker being a target of government surveillance, harassed at airports on many occasions, and had refused to be intimidated.
When Snowden told Poitras, he was a high-level analyst who was ambitious to reveal the truth about the massive surveillance of Americans by the NSA; the filmmaker persuaded him to let her film.
The movie takes you inside the room with Poitras, Greenwald, and Edward Snowden as they try to cope with the raging media storm while trying to make quick decisions that would undoubtedly change their lives.
