Obese, loaded up on steroids and suffering from an autoimmune disease, Joe Cross isn’t what you would consider a healthy person. When he looks at himself in the mirror he see’s a grossly overweight man with a stomach that’s bigger than a beach ball. At the end of his tether and one foot in the grave, Joe decides to go on a mission to lose weight and regain his health.
Unable to rely on conventional medicines to help him maintain a healthy weight long-term, Joe turns to the only option left, the body’s ability to heal itself. He vows that for the next sixty days he will only drink fresh fruit smoothies, vegetable juice and travel across 3,000 miles with only juicer and generator in tow.
While on his road-trip, it’s at an Arizona truck stop that Joe meets a truck driver who is suffering from the same health problems as him. Phil Staples weighs in at 429 lbs and is only a cheeseburger away from a heart-attack. What emerges is nothing short of amazing – an inspiring tale of healing and human connection.
Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead defies the traditional documentary format to present an unconventional and uplifting story of two men from different worlds who each realize that the only person who can save them is themselves.
