India: Delhi’s Growing Pains

There has been a lot of negative press in Delhi recently, from violent attacks on women to hangings, politics and mass protests. This film shines the spotlight on a city bursting at the seams and desperate to develop.

India’s second largest city is expected to grow from 17 to 28 million by the year 2030, and is expected to add enormous pressure to the city’s welfare system.

Delhi police officer Vikram Singh is stationed in the poor districts of Old Delhi. According to him, “they have no money. They sleep on the footpath here, and sometimes they expire”. The middle classes are seeking a better future in new suburbs away from the city, exaggerating the stark imbalance. “Our growth rate is better than Europe..but those without education are languishing at the bottom of the ladder.”
