Pinki is a five-year-old girl from a village in the Mirzapur District, India, born into a desperately poor family, and lives with a severe cleft lip.
Not allowed to attend school at her native village, and ostracised because of her deformity, Pinki lives a life of quiet desperation as she waits and wonders if she will ever receive the cleft surgery. Her parents could never afford the surgery that she desperately needs.
The simple surgery that can cure her is a distant dream until she meets Pankaj, a social worker travelling village to village gathering patients for a hospital that provides free surgery to thousands of poor children each year through The Smile Train program.
The surgery was performed by plastic surgeon Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh, who along with Pinki attended the 81st Academy Award ceremony.
