The Assassination of Russia is an incredibly thought provoking documentary based on the apartment building bombings that rocked Russia in 1999. This film examines the September explosions, and focuses on the foiled bombing in Ryazan on September 22nd, 1999.
This film vividly portrays the inconsistencies in government officials’ reactions to Ryazan, and the officials attempts to consistently blame the Chechens.
The apartment bombings were a series of explosions that hit four apartment blocks within the Russian cities of Buynaksk, Moscow, and Volgodonsk in September 1999, killing 293 people and injuring 651. The explosions occurred in Buynaksk on September 4, Moscow on September 9th and 13th, and Volgodonsk on September 16. Alternative bombs were defused in Moscow at the time.
A similar bomb was found and defused within the Russian city of Ryazan on September 23rd 1999. On the following day the Federal Security Service Director Nikolai Patrushev announced that the Ryazan incident had been a training exercise.
