The Carter: LiL Wayne
Dwayne Carter, otherwise known as rapper Lil Wayne is a platinum selling American hip-hop artist and songwriter.
Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., born September 27th, 1982 in New Orleans. Better known as lil Wayne, he is the president of the New Orleans Cash Money Records and CEO of Young Money Entertainment. He grew up as an only child in the crime-stricken and poverty ridden neighborhood of the 17th ward.
During the filming of The Carter, no interviews with Lil Wayne were conducted by the filmmakers who shot in an entirely Cinéma vérité style. Although he initially agreed to the film, it was later subject to a lawsuit by Carter, who objected to the movie’s release after the second screening at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
Evidently, Carter’s attempts to block the documentary were a reaction to the film’s depiction of Carter’s heavy use of marijuana and cough syrup as recreational drugs.
Despite Carter’s attempts, the film was released on November 17, 2009, after a judge threw out the case. The independently distributed film topped iTunes movie charts in its first week of release and Huffington Post called it “one of the top five greatest hip-hop documentaries of all time.”
