Turlock is the story of how in February of 2012, the owners of A&L Poultry egg farm stopped feeding 50,000 hens that were in their care. Andy Cheung and Lien Diep left the birds isolated for two weeks without food and water.
When the birds were discovered by officials, 17,000 hens had starved to death. The remaining birds were gassed by state officials shortly after the startling discovery.
Animal Place was one of the first animal rescue agencies to learn of this horrible tragedy, but after hours of negotiations, Animal Place and other sanctuaries were given legal custody of hens state veterinarians deemed healthy enough to survive long-term. In the end, over 4,000 hens were saved.
